East or West of Malaga?

We see Malaga as the center location of the Costa del Sol. The Sunshine Coast. More famous and larger cities such as Seville, Granada and Cordoba are inland from the coast. Today we focus on Málaga and the areas east and west of Malaga. You think there is no difference? Well, think again.
Málaga is the capital of the Province of Malaga, in the Autonomous Community of Andalucia. With a population of 571,026 in 2018 it is the second-most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth largest in Spain. Malaga’s international airport allows easy access to the entire region, and the harbour is the destination of a constant stream of cruise ships. The relaxed town is home to a large art scene, Picasso was born here, and lots of museums are awaiting you.
60 kilometres WEST of Malaga!
The western part stretches to Marbella, and you will find well-known names such as Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Mijas. Along the 60 kilometres, the construction boom starting in the Sixties and reaching into the Nineties shows its busy crowded side in urbanizations and high-rise buildings. Those who enjoy living close to their neighbours will be happy here. Once past Marbella, you will reach Estepona, or even Gibraltar. Try and top that.
EAST of Malaga is very different!
Axarquia! Never heard of? Have you heard of places like Rincon del Victoria (what?), Algarobbo (never!), or El Morche (how do you pronounce that?). Perhaps Velez-Malaga is known with Torre del Mar, but certainly Torrox is (for Germans) and Nerja (with Brits). The 60 kilometres from Malaga to Nerja are ‚more Spanish‘. Many Spanish from the north and Madrid have got their holiday homes in the Axarquia. There is tourism - especially in July and August- and you will find urbanisations… just not as many. It's much more relaxed. Quiet.
The range of leisure activities is also more relaxed and offers a lot in nature, such as water sports of all kinds, hiking, bicycle tours or canyoning. Velez is home to the Aquavelis water park, and inland at Comares there is a long zip line. There are over 70 golf courses on the Costa del Sol. Of these, 3 (three!) are east of Málaga.
It is said that the dictator Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975, deliberately divided the areas: west of Malaga = tourism. East of Malaga = agriculture. This could be true… or an urban myth.
East or West of Malaga? You decide.

Oestlich von Málaga? Oder westlich von Málaga?
Ist das ein Unterschied? Ja! Ein grosser sogar.
Nehmen wir Málaga als Zentrum, und damit Mittelpunkt, der andalusischen Costa del Sol. Sonnenküste. Am Meer gelegen. Berühmtere und größere Städte wie Sevilla, Granada und Córdoba liegen allesamt im Hinterland. Wir konzentrieren uns heute auf die Stadt am Meer und die Gegenden östlich und westlich von Málaga. Das ist kein Unterschied? Mitnichten. Sogar ein sehr großer.
Malaga selbst ist mit einer halben Millionen Einwohnern eine nette, überschaubare spanische Küstenstadt, mit internationalem Flughafen und sich wachsender Beliebtheit erfreuendem Hafen. Hallo Kreuzfahrtschiffe. Die schnuckelige Altstadt beheimatet eine große Kunstszene, Picasso ist 1881 in Málaga geboren, Museum reiht sich an Tapas Bar, und Tapas Bar an Museum.
Der westliche Landstrich zieht sich bis Marbella, und trumpft mit bekannten Namen auf wie Torremolinos, Fuengirola und Mijas. Entlang der 60 Kilometer spiegelt sich der spanische Bauboom in all seiner Pracht, Urbanisierung reiht sich an Hochhausburgen, ein buntes Sammelsurium der Baustile der 60er, 70er, 80er und 90er des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. Wer gerne kuschlig eng am Nachbarhaus wohnt ist hier richtig. Hinter Marbella geht’s weiter bis Estepona, oder gar bis Gibraltar, besser wird es nicht.
Besser wird es erst nach Gibraltar, an der AtlantikKüste der Costa de la Luz. Eine wunderschöne Gegend, und im Juli und August durchaus eine Überlegung wert, da es am Atlantik etwas kühler Ist, als am Mittelmeer.
Ganz anders ist es ‘östlich von Málaga’.
Axarquia! Noch nie gehört? Das ist die Gegend östlich von Málaga. Hier finden sich Orte wie Rincon del Victoria (was?), Algarobbo (nie gehört), oder El Morche (wie spricht man das aus?). Vielleicht bekannt ist Velez-Malaga mit Torre del Mar, sicherlich jedoch Torrox (bei deutschen) und Nerja (bei Briten). Die 60 Kilometer von Málaga bis Nerja sind ursprünglicher, ‘spanischer’. Viele Nord-Spanier und Madrilener er haben hier Ferienhäuse, die sie in den Sommermonaten Juli und August besuchen, um mit der ganzen Familie Urlaub zu machen.
Auch das Freizeitangebot ist entspannter, und bietet viel in der Natur, wie Wassersport aller Art, wandern, Fahrradtouren oder auch Canyoning. Velez beheimatest den Wasserpark Aquavelis, und im Hinterland bei Comares gibt es eine lange Zipline. Es gibt es über 70 Golfplätze an der Costa del Sol. Davon sind 3 (drei!) östlich von Málaga.
Man erzählt sich, das der Diktator Franco, der Spanien von 1939 bis zu seinem Tod 1975 regierte, die Gegenden gezielt so eingeteilt hat: westlich von Málaga = Tourismus. Östlich von Málaga = Landwirtschaft. Ob es sich so zugetragen hat? Vielleicht.
