Osborne! That’s the name of a sherry company!
The Osborne bull is a 14-metre (46 ft) high advertising board located near major roads throughout Spain. The first bull was erected in 1956 (!) to advertise the „Brandy de Jerez“. Today, there are 91 bull boards, with a majority of 23 in Andalusia, the home of the Osborne sherry company. What started as an advertising idea, turned into a national symbol in Spain.
In 1994 a law that prohibited all roadside advertising of alcoholic beverages came into effect and the bulls were therefore to be removed. By this time the signs were nationally renowned and public outrage resulted in the signs being retained but all references to the original advertisers being removed. The Court eventually allowed these signs to remain on the grounds that they have become a part of the landscape and have "aesthetic or cultural significance", thus turning the bulls into public domain images.
Only two signs remain in Spain with the word "Osborne" still written on them. One is at the Jerez de la Frontera airport, and the other is in the nearby town of El Puerto de Santa María, where the Osborne headquarters is based. Osborne! Das ist ein Sherry-Unternehmen!
Der Osborne-Stier ist eine 14 Meter hohe Werbetafel, die an Hauptstraßen in ganz Spanien steht. Der erste Stier wurde bereits 1956 (!) aufgestellt, um für den „Brandy de Jerez“ zu werben. Heute gibt es in Spanien insgesamt 91 Stiere, davon stehen 23 in Andalusien, der Heimat der Osborne Sherry Company.
Was als Werbeidee begann, wurde in Spanien zum nationalen Symbol. Aber mit Hindernissen! Denn 1994 trat ein Gesetz in Kraft, das Straßenwerbung für alkoholische Getränke verbot. Die Stiere sollten entfernt werden! Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren diese jedoch landesweit bekannt und die Spanier ging auf die Barrikaden. Nach einigem Hin und Her erlaubte der spanische Gerichtshof schließlich, dass die Stiere erhalten blieben: sie seien Teil der Landschaft geworden und hätten "ästhetische oder kulturelle Bedeutung". Jedoch nur der Stier, ohne Beschriftung.
Heute sind nur noch zwei Schilder mit der Schriftzug "Osborne" erhalten. Eines befindet sich am Flughafen Jerez de la Frontera und das andere in der Stadt El Puerto de Santa María, in der sich der Hauptsitz von Osborne befindet. Das Bild des Stiers ist weithin bekannt und auf Aufklebern, Postkarten und anderen Gegenständen zu finden. Es ist zu einem Symbol für Spanien geworden https://www.brandydejerez.es/en
